A method for Critical Thinking ²
There is no one best critical thinking textbook for all types of criticism and all types of contexts, so you need to find the one that will work best for your pedagogical situation. A textbook dictates course/module structure more in critical thinking than in other areas of philosophy because the exercises are closely tied to the content.
- Sort out your pedagogical goals. Figure out what you would like students to be able to do at the end of the course — a tough decision in itself, but my suggestions may help narrow it down.
- Choose the type of analysis (criticism) you wish the students to learn, for which I developed a fieldguide.
- Choose the types of exercises.
Keeping down student costs is a further consideration, and some textbooks are available free on-line, while some printed books with moderate cost extend on-line to rich supplementary material, exercises and instructor tools.
